The stepfather of a local NBA star is in trouble with the law.

Early Monday morning, Newport News Police arrested 50-year-old Michael Andre Freeman on 25th Street in the city's East End. This after officers found crack cocaine in his car.

Freeman is the stepfather of Hampton native and NBA star Allen Iverson.

He's charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, and possession of paraphernalia.

Freeman is behind bars in the Newport News City Jail on no bond. WAVY News put in a request to talk to Freeman. He said "no".

"Mister Freeman was arrested around 3:30. He was stopped on a minor traffic violation," said Lou Thurston, the spokesperson for the Newport News Police Department

Early Monday morning, a Newport News Police officer pulled a car over on 25th Street for not using a turn signal.

Behind the wheel was 50-year old Michael Freeman.

When the officer looked in Freeman's car, he saw an open alcohol container on the front seat.

"The officer asked for and received permission to search the vehicle," Thurston said.

When that officer searched Freeman's car, he found suspected crack cocaine, scales, and less than $3,000 cash.

Polce arrested freeman, charging him with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, and possession of paraphernalia.

And this isn't Freeman's first run in with the law on drug charges. Ten years ago, a Hampton judge found him guilty on cocaine charges, but he served no time behind bars. Instead, a judge sentenced Freeman to 20 years of probation, suspended his driver's license for six months, and ordered Freeman to pay more than $3,700 in fines and court cost.

NBA superstar Allen Iverson, now with the Denver Nuggets, testified on his stepfather's behalf in 1997, but would not talk about his stepfather's legal troubles when we caught up with him outside the courthouse.

Iverson had a very successful career after leaving Hampton Roads.

In 1994,  the Bethel High School star got a scholarship to Georgetown University.

As a Hoya, Iverson was named Rookie of the Year,  and was the team's all-time leading scorer.

After only two years,  he decided to go pro, and was the first player picked in the 1996 draft,  by the Philadelphia 76ers.

Then, almost a decade later, the 76ers traded Iverson to the Denver Nuggets.
