The Men In Black star, 38, deposed TOM CRUISE from the top spot in US magazine Newsweek’s annual list.
Will also beat off fierce opposition from movie hunks JOHNNY DEPP and BRAD PITT to get the accolade.
His films have taken £2BILLON at the box office worldwide and movie chiefs now acknowledge anything he stars in is certain to be a surefire hit.
One top producer said: “Let’s put it this way. There’s Will Smith and then there are the mortals.
“Will is the only thing in this business, the ONLY thing, that guarantees an opening weekend.”
Newsweek’s list is based on how much money actors’ films take on opening weekends.
And no one is better at opening than Will.
Which ever film he appears in, from the sci-fi I, Robot to the romantic comedy Hitch, he is a success.
His latest film The Pursuit Of Happyness took more than £150million worldwide — a huge sum given it was a story-generated film with no special effects.
Producers say the African-American actor appeals to all types.
One said: “The audience has enormous affection for him. His appeal is so universal that he transcends race. He invites the white community in, yet he is credible with the black community. That’s a pretty hard trick.”
